Day 00: Delhi-Manali.

The exclusive journey the land of the unknown begins from Manali, a famous destination of Himachal Pradesh. The excitement begins right from the first turn of the route with the famous Rohtang Pass, one of the highest passes of the world, a beautiful place to be. Rudyard Kipling said of this region `Surely the God lives here, this is no place for men`, Keylong is exciting, delightful and strange. Legends state that there were two lovers, Chandra, daughter of the Moon and Bhaga, son of the God, to perform their eternal marriage, Baralacha la was decided and hence two rivers are witnessed, Chandra and Bhaga. Moreover, it connects Himachal Pradesh to Jammu and Kashmir. Sarchu is a tented camp in the Himalayas; the spot is a start point for the trek to Zanskar trek.

The stretch towards Leh promises to be one of the most panoramic sceneries. We will come through the two passes, Nakeela and Lachangla. The typical and mysterious thing you will notice while reaching the top of any pass is the Buddhist Prayer Flags everywhere. The Exclusiveness of this particular pass is huge gathering of small rocks which denote good luck for the travellers. A few travellers, who are lucky enough to witness this place, gather these rocks for the safe journey. You will come across Skyangchu Thang, claimed to be the Biggest and Highest Plateau on Earth, which again adds to the attraction for the place. Taglang La at the height of 5,359 m is claimed to be the second highest motorable pass in India, an important base for the adventure lovers in the heart of the Himalayas. Indus Valley, known as the soul of ladakh is the most important part of Ladakh region. Interestingly, it touches the border of three countries, Pakistan, Afghanistan and China.

On the way to Pangong Lake, another pass will mesmerise you, Changla Pass named after the Sage Changla Baba, Claimed as the third highest motoring road on earth at 5300m. It`s guarded and maintained by the Indian Army, a true paradise for the adventure lovers. Moving further we come to the heavenly lake Pangong Lake. A few years back the government decided to open it to the tourists, the lake is under army surveillance. You would rarely feel so close to nature and the scenery is enigmatic.

We will move further with the indispensible memories of Pangong Lake towards Thikse Monastery. It’s famous because of the resemblance it has, like that of Potala Palace in Lhasa and is the largest Monastery in Ladakh. The centre of attraction is a 15 m high statue of Maitreya (future Buddha), the largest statue in Ladakh. Apart of that, we would see few other attractions such as Tara Temple and Nunnery. Temple is dedicated to Goddess Tara with some beautiful scriptures and images. The Nunnery is the school for the community of nuns, interestingly Thikse Monastery has received a degree of International Attention and Support because of the nunnery moving further we will visit.

As claimed, every sunrise is a new one here. The stretch towards Nubra Valley leads to Khardungla Pass meaning Pass of Lower Castle, the highest motorable road in the world at the height of 5359 m. It is not very often one gets to drive on a road at this height. The views from this pass are no doubt breathtaking. The snow capped peaks are cold, unconquered and a piece of advice, don’t exert too much. The next destination is Nubra Valley originally known as Ldumra which means the valley of flowers. The valley is one of the last sacred treasures of our planet, cut off for most of the time in the year.

The centre of attraction here in the valley is Diskit Monastery. It is the oldest and the largest Buddhist Monastery in the Valley. Diskit often referred as Ghost Town, is truly an experience of lifetime. The paths cluttered up with landslides and whipped off by flooded rivers would justify our theme experience the unexpected. Sumur, a master piece claimed to be is a beautiful village in the valley. Built in 1841, Samstanling Gompa is one of the oldest monasteries in the region.

Today, we will visit the exotic barren desert and drifting sand dunes in the valley. As the trip promises, break the conventional and walk the path less travelled, double humped Camel safari is waiting for you. Dull and Monotonous at the first sight, step in deeper and you will be surprisingly shocked with the experience. Later on, we drive back to Leh via Khardungla Pass.

Interestingly, the entire day is dedicated to the monasteries. Phyang monastery, with number of sacred shrines in it is one of the most sought after places in Leh. The 900 years old museum adds to the attraction. Likir Monastery is the next to visit, Likir means the encircled Naga. The monastery has got a very unique name because it stands surrounded by the bodies of the two great serpent spirits, the Naga-Rajas and Nanda. Next is Basgo, the ruined state, the monastery is famous for its Buddha Statue and murals. Monastery stands hill high towering over the ruins of the town. Ladakh`s most loved monastery named as Alchi is the next destination. The monastery is one of the most sought after tourist destination because of its Indian touch in the paintings.

Way towards Kargil, we will come through the Lamayuru Monastery, one of the largest and oldest Monasteries with some 150 permanent monk’s resident. Legend says Lamayuru Valley used to have a lake. Further towards the stretch for Kargil, we will come across Fatu-La Pass claimed to be the highest pass on Srinagar. The entire stretch promises to witness some of the beautiful views in the valley.

The name Kargil is said to be derived from the words Khar and rKil. Khar means Castle and rKil means Centre, thus a castle between the kingdoms. Drass is the major destination of Kargil, claimed to be the second coldest inhabited place on Earth. One can have spectacular views of famous peaks, Tiger Hill and Tololing Peak. A tribute to Vijay Smarak, dedicated to Indian Soldiers who laid their life during Kargil War is something every person should be bound to do.

Interestingly, Srinagar is called as the Venice of the East; Srinagar is the largest city in India without a Hindi majority. A very beautiful city famous for its Lakes, Gardens and Houseboats. Dal Lake is a beauty with Houseboats adding to its attraction. Shalimar Bagh (Garden) and Nishat Bagh is the gateway to some of the most exotic gardens in India. Enigmatic locations in Srinagar make it one of the most sought after destinations in India. The expedition of Kashmir is incomplete without woollen shawls and woodcarvings. The Pashmina shawls and walnut woods are world famous.
